Uganda Wildlife Education Conservation Centre | UWEC : is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the heart of Entebbe Uganda. Initially, it was founded in 1952 by the colonial government to accommodate injured, orphaned and confiscated animals from poachers. Later in 1960’s, it changed its role to a traditional zoo (Entebbe Zoo). It is a premier institution dedicated to promoting understanding, appreciation and conservation of Uganda’s rich biodiversity. As a matter of fact, UWEC offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the wonders of the natural world. On the other hand, the center is a showcase for Uganda’s incredible biodiversity. Therefore travelers have got the privilege to visit and have a glimpse of what is found in the wilderness of Uganda. Animals here include; lions, African rock pythons, crocodiles, white rhinos, giraffes, leopards, elephants, etc.

It is also a home to over 120 bird species like shoebills, crested cranes, parrots, peacocks, etc. Primates include; chimpanzees, vervet monkeys, Debraza monkeys, black and white colobus, etc. Apart from animals, the center is also a haven to a diverse range of butterfly species and plant species. Besides viewing wildlife, the center also offers educational opportunities for visitors of all ages. By providing these educational opportunities, UWEC aims at inspiring a new generation of conservationists. This is done through promoting wildlife conservation and supporting sustainable development in Uganda. In fact, this program allows participants to step into the shoes of a zoo keeper to. You hereby gain firsthand experience in caring for various animals housed at the center. During this activity, participants engage in a variety of activities. These include; feeding, cleaning animal enclosures and learning about the specific needs and behaviors of different species. This interactive opportunity not only fosters a deeper understanding of wildlife but also emphasizes the importance of conservation efforts.

Additionally, participants receive guidance from experienced keepers who share their knowledge and passion for animal care. However, to participate in this enriching program, a few requirements must be met. First and foremost, participants should be at least 12 years old. This ensures that they possess the maturity needed to handle animals responsibly. Furthermore, booking in advance is essential since slots are limited in order to allow a more focused and personalized experience. Lastly, it is important to come dressed appropriately for outdoor activities. These include; closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing to ensure safety and comfort throughout the day. Bird Watching

How to Get There

The center is located approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Kampala and conveniently situated near Entebbe International Airport. It is a 48min-1 hour drive from Kampala via Kampala-Entebbe highway.
